Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic with an amino group side chain attached to the penicillin structure. Ampicillin is a derivative of penicillin that inhibits bacterial cell-wall synthesis in Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria by inactivating transpeptidases on the inner surface of the bacterial cell membrane. Highly active against Gram-negative bacteria. beta-Lactamase sensitive, and thus used as a selective agent for transformation of plasmid encoding for beta-Lactamase production.
