Zeocin is a glycopeptide antibiotic belonging to the bleomycin family of antibiotics. Effective against most bacteria, filamentous fungi, yeast, plant, and animal cells. Causes cell death by intercalating into DNA and inducing double strand breaks of the DNA. Used as a selective agent for the incorporation of the Sh ble gene, which encodes a 13 kDA Dalton protein. The protein binds to the antibiotic and prevents binding of Zeocin to DNA.
